Agencies Prepare Asian Obesity Study

Agencies involved in a study called Growing Up in Singapore Toward Healthy Outcomes are trying to intercept obesity and diabetes among the youth in Singapore.

fat asian kidsNo fewer than four agencies have gathered to figure out how to intercept obesity and diabetes among young people in Singapore.

The new study, called Growing Up in Singapore Toward Healthy Outcomes — or “GUSTO” for short — will examine factors among unborn and newborn children that lead to the risk of metabolic diseases, such as becoming obese or diabetic.

An Asian study is crucial, since the most current information about all this comes mostly from the West. So far, around 300 pregnant women have agreed to participate.

The research will aim to find genetic markers in babies that indicate high risk for certain diseases. This information can help scientists better understand the diseases at their most primary stages – and help them develop strategies to prevent them. Video plays below.
